The FBO will supply a maximum blend of up to 35% SAF with Jet A1 fuel, certified to meet the highest standards. The SAF provided is derived from used cooking oil, a renewable feedstock which is refined through the Hydrotreated Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA) process.

“As the industry aligns with global environmental goals and the Business Aviation Commitment on Climate Change, sustainability stands as a cornerstone of Luxaviation Group, paving the way for a more sustainable future in aviation. We strive to set new standards and inspire others to join us in embracing innovation to enhance corporate social responsibility,” said Patrick Hansen, CEO, Luxaviation Group.

The announcement follows the FBO’s recent transition to fully electric ground handling equipment (GHE) in an effort towards sustainable aviation.

The FBO is managed under the ExecuJet brand.

In terms of carbon savings, the FBO operator said that flying from ExecuJet Paris Le Bourget FBO to ExecuJet Johannesburg FBO on a Global 7500 utilising a 35% blend of SAF/Jet A1fuel, customers can reduce their CO2 emissions by approximately 20 tons.

The European Business Aviation Association (EBAA) and the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) announced a joint initiative to increase use of SAF within the European business aviation sector.

The plan outlines ambitious targets, starting with a goal of 5% SAF usage by 2025; 20% by 2030, followed by a significant jump to 60% by 2040. The roadmap then aims for an 80% utilisation by 2045, culminating in a 100% SAF adoption by 2050. The move goes beyond the current legislative requirements.

EBAA and GAMA shared their roadmap in Sustainable Aviation Fuel Recommendations for Business Aviation Across Europe laying out the strategies and measures to encourage operators to adopt SAF at a higher rate than what is mandated by existing regulations such as ReFuel EU.

“This initiative is a testament to our industry’s dedication to sustainability. We are not just meeting regulatory requirements; we are setting higher standards for ourselves and leading by example. It’s crucial that we support the development and distribution of SAF, and the ‘Book & Claim’ system is a crucial tool allowing for an accelerated uptake of sustainable fuels,” said Holger Krahmer, secretary general, EBAA.

Despite the ambitious targets, the initiative also acknowledges the challenges faced in sourcing SAF, particularly its limited availability in certain regions. To address this, EBAA and GAMA call for the need to implement a robust and reliable ‘Book & Claim’ system.

“With SAF playing a key role in decarbonising business aviation, it is vital that we work with authorities and legislators to incentivise and strengthen efforts to develop, deploy and increase overall usage of SAF. This initiative further demonstrates the industry’s commitment to achieving our sustainability goals,” added Pete Bunce, president and CEO, GAMA.

Luxaviation Group has launched a charter travel management app, which includes “eco-friendly” travel options.

The Luxaviation App will enable clients  to use carbon offset schemes and book empty leg flights at a lower cost on aircraft that would otherwise fly empty. The clients will also have the option to use Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) as a means of cutting their flight’s carbon emissions.

According to Pieter Steyn, chief information officer, Luxaviation, the development of the app was a direct response to demand from the business aviation market.

We have developed this technology in-house so that it is totally customisable to react to the charter demands,” said Steyn. “We are leading the market during an exciting time for business aviation, as advancement in technology allows us to truly understand the behaviours of our customers.”

The new app comes after the launch of the operator’s online platform in September last year, which the firm said has been a key tool ever since. It includes new features such as live chat with Luxaviation charter teams even during flights and draws on the existing features of the online platform, such as booking tracking from confirmation to arrival, as well as access to aircraft’s specifications.

Other business aviation companies are investing more in digital platforms too. Last week, Jetcraft partnered with software provider Bluetail to help brokers protect clients’ aircraft value by digitally storing logbooks and records using its cloud-based platform

Jetex has partnered with distributor  360 Jet Fuel to offer its customers access to Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) through a  book-and-claim system.

Jetex’s new 360 Green Fuel book-and-claim system enables customers to source SAF based on their entire carbon emissions from business aviation flight travel  in one transaction. This means that SAF can be sourced for Jetex flights, even when a physical SAF supply isn’t available. The partnership with 360 Jet Fuel aims to guarantee the credibility of emission reductions by using third-party auditing of the system.

Where transporting SAF to an airport is impractical or could lead to higher greenhouse gas emissions, the book-and-claim system aims to provide a workable solution that enables carbon reductions.

Clients who use the option will be able to claim the carbon emission reductions by purchasing the amount of SAF (to be used on another flight) that corresponds to the amount of fossil fuel used on their flight. They will then receive a certificate specifying the amount of SAF purchased and an audited statement outlining the CO2 reduction.

“The first thing that comes to my mind when I think about my family, my children and grandchildren, is how will the world be in the coming 30 to 40 years,” said Adel Mardini , founder and CEO, Jetex. [We must] work together with everyone to make the effects of climate change less on our lives and our future.”

To ensure credible emission reductions, 360 Jet Fuel will source SAF quantities from International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) certified suppliers for delivery to a Jetex partner.

The option is available to Jetex customers immediately.

The Council on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (CoSAFA) has introduced an accounting support platform for companies purchasing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) through the book and claim system.

CoSAFA’s Methodology for SAF Environmental Attribute Transactions offers information on SAF accounting and auditing procedures to support global book-and-claim systems. According to CoSAFA, the methodology helps ensure audibility, prevent double counting and provide transparency on aviation sustainability and decarbonisation claims.

The book-and-claim system allows (corporate) buyers to source SAF based on their total aviation footprint in one transaction, rather than sourcing through each airline or operator individually. Double counting then refers to when a company claims the environmental benefits of SAF through book-and-claim, when in fact it has already been used in a previous transaction.

The transition to Sustainable Aviation Fuels will be the greatest contributor to business aviation achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050,” said Claude Hurley, director, Environment & Flight Operations, the International Business Aviation Council (IBAC).

Book-and-claim systems are required for wider SAF uptake, especially in areas where it’s not yet readily available.”

Daniel Chereau, assistant director, Climate Policy, International Air Transport Association (IATA) agreed: “To scale up SAF use, we need robust book-and-claim systems that are agnostic, credible, and provide the necessary level of transparency.”

CoSAFA said the aim of the service is to provide access to decarbonisation solutions for all in the global aviation sector, as well as create an “attractive and stable investment environment” for commercially viable decarbonisation solutions. It also aims to ensure regulatory bodies and aviation firms can rely upon the integrity of book-and-claim transaction systems, and that they are gaining the benefit they pay for and not double counting.

Curt Castagna, president and CEO, National Air Transportation Association highlighted that the service was created alongside stakeholders in aviation to develop the SAF accounting method.

“[The Methodology for SAF Environmental Attribute Transactions] provides the critical transparency needed in the development of fair rules for book-and-claim,” said Castagna. “Through continued collaboration across the aviation industry, CoSAFA can provide a unified foundation for SAF transactions.”

4AIR has signed its 100th client since its launch in January 2021.

The firm, which helps companies offset their carbon emissions and use Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), has now built a  client base within business and commercial aviation with companies aiming to reduce their carbon footprints. But Kennedy Ricci, president, 4AIR said there is still “more to be done.”

4AIR’s clients include FBOs like Clay Lacy Aviation and Fontainebleau Aviation, business jet operators such as Verijet and Tradewind Aviation and corporate flight departments, airports and partnerships within aviation insurance. It also works with manufacturers such as Embraer and GE Honda Aero Engines.

Ricci said that he has seen a growth in demand for the firm’s services in just two years, with many of the company’s early clients increasing their offset commitments and graduating to higher ratings of programmes.

“4AIR pushes the envelope around our idea of a sustainability programme. Our programme begins where most others end and lays out a path for a longer-term approach to sustainability,” said Ricci.

Aviation has the opportunity to be carbon-neutral today, and our programme answers the question of how to start while enabling improved and more comprehensive solutions over time.”

Ricci added that as SAF is a drop-in solution that can be used in ordinary aircraft, it is the biggest opportunity for decarbonisation due to the reduction in carbon emissions and its increasing availability.

Nancy Bsales, chief operating officer, 4AIR, agreed. “The aircraft we have today will still be flying in 2050, so solutions like SAF that enable existing aircraft to decarbonise will be critical,” she said.

While the price for SAF remains at a premium, Bsales added that new state and federal incentive programmes, like the blender tax credits for SAF included in the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, are helping incentivise increased SAF adoption.
