Brazilian multinational aerospace corporation Embraer announced that it will increase its sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) offtake at the Melbourne Orlando International Airport (KMLB), Florida.

Embraer first entered into a SAF agreement with Avfuel in July 2021 under which it received one 8,000-gallon truckload of Neste MY SAF per quarter to Sheltair MLB, the FBO that provides storage and handling services for Embraer.

Under the new agreement, the Avfuel will make weekly SAF deliveries from April onwards. The partnership is expected to result in a total of 240,000 gallons of SAF delivered to Embraer in 2024.

“Embraer’s collaboration with Avfuel and Sheltair marks a pivotal milestone in our journey toward net-zero emission flight operations,” said Michael Amalfitano, president and CEO, Embraer Executive Jets. “Our continued investment in SAF demonstrates our dedication to reducing emissions today and driving the industry closer to the net-zero aviation goal by 2050.”

A profile of aviation fuel company Avfuel, a photographic tour of the BBJ Select business liner and our latest connectivity research all feature in the latest edtion of Corporate Jet Investor Quarterly. Also included is an interview with Darren Broderick, CEO at Asian Corporate Aviation Management and an investigation into why VIP helicopter flights are not more popular with business jet travellers.

Craig Sincock, president and CEO of Avfuel traces the start of his aviation career back to his first day at college. Happening to share a room with two pilots, Sincock taught his roommates tennis and skiing in exchange for flying lessons. Now, his company Avfuel fuels one-in-three business jets every day and employs a team of 1,000 people. We trace how Sincock, aided by family and colleagues built the company based on his principle: “Aufuel’s business is less about fuel and more about simplifying things for its customers.”

From fuel to one of the aircraft it powers. Boeing’s new BBJ Select jet is the easiest way to acquire this popular business liner. We take a virtual tour of the aircraft’s luxurious interior with this photo feature guide. Choosing the interior for an 884sqft (82sqm) Boeing Business Jet 737-7 is the equivalent of outfitting a whole apartment. The manufacturer’s BBJ Select product is intended for people who want an aircraft with a streamlined design process.

A streamlined service from business jet to VIP helicopter transfer flights is growing in popularity – a bit. But some high-net worth individuals are still wary of choosing rotary transportation. We look at the advantages and how companies such as HeliFlite, Flexjet Helicopters and Castle Air are reassuring prospective clients.

After rotary aircraft we move to tiltwings, with a feature looking at how new life is being breathed into an old design. Peter Schmidt, chief operating officer and co-founder of Transcend tells us how h plans to whisk passengers from Manhattan to Boston in just 32 minutes for a ticket price of $283 – cheaper than an Uber.

Business jet connectivity is the theme of new CJI research designed to understand how owners and operators select a solution for their aircraft. Consistency and reliability are the top two factors jet owners and operators take into consideration before equipping their aircraft with a connectivity solution, according to our research, conducted in partnership with Intelsat. Read more about these influencers and the third factor guiding connectivity choices in our feature.

Meanwhile, satisfied clients are the main motivation for Darren Broderick, CEO at Asian Corporate Aviation Management (ACAM). An aviator with more than 18,000 hours in his log books and a rescue award, Broderick has put his flying career on hold to take ACAM on “a rocket ride” towards the West. “It’s about success, it’s not about money. Success and customer satisfaction, they are my mottos,” he tells us.

Elsewhere in the latest edition of Corporate Jet Investor Quarterly, Gulfstream president, Mark Burns shares his excitement about the first transatlantic flight fueled entirely by SAF in a G600. Plus our Jet Data feature includes three new business jets: the Boeing Select, the Cessna Citation CJ3 New Gen and the Honda Echelon.

Finally, in our Life in seven questions feature, Iris Riesen, accountable manager at the Zurich-based Cat Aviation explains how the smell of kerosene and the excitement of business aviation lured her back into the industry after a spell away.

Avfuel announced that Monterey Fuel Company has won the Early Adopter Award: Leadership in Sustainability for its efforts towards increasing sustainability in aviation through the sales of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

The Monterey Fuel Company started offering Avfuel’s supply of Neste MY SAF in 2021. Neste produces SAF from sustainably-sourced, renewable waste and residue materials including used cooking oil which meets ASTM D-1655 specification.

“Our team is honoured to receive this recognition, proud to support our eco-conscious community, and thankful to Avfuel for enabling us to be at the leading edge of sustainability by providing SAF at the highest blend ratio available. Through this partnership, we’re able to accomplish real progress toward aviation’s CO2 reduction goals by offering flight departments and operators a pathway for decreasing their environmental impact,” said Matthew Wright, vice president, Monterey Fuel Company.

Monterey Fuel Company will receive carbon credits instead of traditional trophy or plaque. Avfuel purchased carbon credits in the Monterey Fuel Company’s name and will present the certificates to the company at Del Monte Aviation.

The fuel company was awarded for its efforts in significantly scaling SAF sales at its Del Monte Aviation FBO. SAF sales at the FBO have increased considerably since it began offering the fuel.

Today, the FBO accounts for 94% of SAF transactions on the MRY field, positioning itself as a leading SAF provider not only on the West Coast, but globally, and putting its commitment to support CO2 emissions reductions in action.

“The Monterey Fuel Company has been a huge champion for the adoption of sustainable aviation fuel,” said Keith Sawyer, manager of alternate fuels, Avfuel.

“It was the first company to work with Avfuel to provide an FBO with consistent supply of SAF back in March 2021. Its FBOs, Del Monte Aviation (KMRY) and Monterey Jet Center (KMRY), have continued to be strong advocates for the use of SAF at Monterey Regional Airport ever since and have transitioned multiple high-volume customers to the sustainable option. We felt their eagerness to lead SAF efforts from the forefront of the initiative was worthy of recognition.”

Avfuel supplied Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) for Dassault, Embraer and Textron aircraft flying to EBACE. All flew across the Atlantic using a blend of Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel.

The fuel company arranged deliveries to Wichita, Kansas, Little Rock, Arkansas and Melbourne, Florida. Avfuel says that with an average blend ratio of 30% SAF to petroleum-based jet fuel, SAF provided a 76t (metric ton) reduction in carbon emissions over the fuel’s lifecycle. This is the equivalent of the amount of carbon emissions created by consuming 176 barrels of oil.

Avfuel also worked with Atlantic Aviation in White Plains, New York to offer flight operators headed to EBACE the benefits of SAF through a book and claim arrangement.

Some 13 Avfuel Network FBOs regularly offer SAF in the US.

“I’m proud of the work in sustainability we’ve accomplished, both in terms of the sustainable programmes we offer our customers and in the efforts we make as a company to reduce our footprint,” said Marci Ammerman, Avfuel’s vice president of Marketing. “Sustainability is now at the core of our operations—it’s not just another selling point or a mere ideal. We are profoundly committed to bettering the health of our world by identifying and adopting green alternatives.”

Avfuel and FBO company Atlantic Aviation have made an agreement to supply sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to all four of Atlantic’s Colorado locations.

This agreement adds three new SAF supply bases across the state, at Atlantic’s Montrose (KMTJ), Hayden/Steamboat (KHDN) and Aspen/Rifle (KRIL) bases. The two companies previously agreed supply of SAF through Neste for Atlantic’s Aspen base (KASE) in Colorado last year.

The blend used is “one of the highest average blend rations available in business aviation to date” according to Atlantic, with a ratio of 30/70 SAF to petroleum-based jet fuel. Each truckload of the blend reduces carbon emissions by 19 metric tons across its lifecycle, the equivalent to the amount of carbon captured by 22.5 acres of US forests per year.

“We view SAF as the most viable and impactful step toward enabling a greener future for our industry, and are committed to supporting customer sustainability goals accordingly,” said Brian Corbett, chief commercial and sustainability officer, Atlantic Aviation. “Striving to reduce our impact on the environment is a promise we’ve made to our customers, our staff and the communities we serve.”

Back in June, Avfuel agreed to buy 1bn gallons of SAF from low carbon fuel specialist Alder Fuels over 20 years. The multi-million-dollar deal represents the biggest publicly-announced SAF commitment to supply business aviation and will begin in early 2024.

Recruiting new generations of girls and young women to aviation and aerospace was the aim of the latest Girls in Aviation Day (GIAD) staged last week by FBO specialist Sheltair and Women in Aviation International (WAI).

A series of events at Sheltair’s Florida and Georgia FBOs introduced girls and young women (age eight to 17) to a range of careers on offer in aviation and aerospace. Allison McKay, CEO, WAI, said: “We know that introducing the next generation to positive female models in all areas of aviation will help move the needle to break barriers for women in all aviation and aerospace careers.”

Former NASA astronaut Nicole Stott, Air Race Classic pilot Bunnie Ambrose, Lakeland Operations air traffic controller Chelsie Baskins and Sheltair president Lisa Holland were four of the 20 guest speakers. The event also featured exhibits including aircraft tours, science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) activities, mentorship opportunities to provide career information and ground-support workshops.

During the day, five young women received Ketty Skelton Scholarships, worth $4,000 each. Awarded by the Tampa Bay Aviation Association (TBAA), the scholarship is designed to support their career development within the industry.

WAI has more than 15,000 members dedicated to encouraging and advancing women in aviation and aerospace. This year’s event was the eighth annual GIAD aiming to bring more young girls into the industry. McKay said: “With the generous support of WAI corporate sponsors, dedicated WAI chapters and corporate members, we are … opening doors of previously unimagined opportunities in aviation and aerospace for girls around the globe,” McKay added.

Lisa Holland, president, Sheltair welcomed the opportunity to introduce a new generation of women to aviation: “Having our Sheltair network host and sponsor Girls in Aviation Day echoes our shared mission with Women in Aviation International: Empowering the future generation of aviators begins today by supporting and encouraging all who have their sights skyward.”

Sheltair also supports other educational programmes, including Embry Riddle’s Project Liftoff, aimed at developing a leadership pipeline by recruiting high-performing students from diverse backgrounds and Aerospace Centre for Excellence’s (ACE) project Skylab, the aerospace STEM educational facility. It is also co-founder of the Future Takes Flight Scholarship Program, which aims to award six annual $5000 scholarships to aspiring pilots, aviation technicians as well as students to continue education, with Avfuel.
