The FAA has returned Mexico’s aviation safety rating to the highest level after more than two years of collaborative work.

With a return to Category 1 status, Mexican carriers can add new services and routes to the US, and US airlines can resume marketing and selling tickets with their names and designator codes on Mexican-operated flights.

In a statement on social media, Katie Thomson, deputy administrator, FAA said: “This took a lot of collaborative work between Mexico and the FAA team over the course of two years. The restored status will allow Mexican carriers to add new services and routes to the US and US carriers to market and code share with Mexican carriers. Great result for safety, great result for passengers.”

The FAA downgraded Mexico’s International Aviation Safety Assessment (IASA) rating to Category 2 in May 2021 after finding the country did not meet ICAO safety standards. In the period following, the FAA via technical assistance agreements helped Mexico’s Agencia Federal de Aviacion Civil resolve the safety issues that led to the downgrade. Including sending a team of aviation safety experts multiple times over the past two years to assist with the work.

Flapper has celebrated flying its 30,000th client, building on more than 320% growth over the past two years.

To mark the milestone, Flapper co-founder and CEO Paul Malicki surprised the football-loving passenger with a gift before he boarded the flight at Rio de Janeiro’s airport. The themed merchandise was specially designed based the client’s flight history, which included charters to the Copa Libertadores finals.

“It feels as if we are only beginning our journey,” Malicki told Corporate Jet Investor. “Taking into account the size of our accessible market and the advancement of our technology, we are making an internal prediction of how long it will take us to acquire 100,000 paid customers.”

Flapper prepared a set of personalised items signed by Rio de Janeiro’s Flamengo football club. “Our client’s enthusiasm for the club had been well-known for a long time, having chartered flights to their games in the past, so it was an effortless guess,” said Malicki. The list included a leather bag, a wine holder, a knitted polo shirt and, of course, a pair of Flapper-themed socks.

Malicki said technology has allowed the air charter brokerage industry to be scalable, so it no longer requires an extensive workforce of 500 or so to operate. Headquartered in Brazil and with local operations in South America, Mexico, Florida and Portugal, Flapper was launched in 2016. Starting out as a pay-per-seat helicopter booking app, the firm switched to include air charter, including private jets, corporate airliners and turbo-props. Today rotorcraft makes up only 6% of annual revenues, with the core business focused on charter.

“Our technology has allowed us to automate the traditional charter process and make it more transparent, which was something the market was lacking when we launched. The clients can browse through hundreds of aircraft on our marketplace, receive a hard quote through a personalised link, pay using their desired payment method and rate the flight on TrustPilot (another API integration),” said Malicki.

More than 1,700 safety-vetted aircraft are currently available on Flapper platform, with plans to reach 4,000 by the end of 2024. An in-house team nicknamed ‘Aircraft Hunters’ searches for and adds new commercial jets, turbo-props and helicopters, including those with Part 135 and Part 121 certificates.

Flapper claims its quotation system estimates the price of the charter flight, which can then be arranged in less than 2 hours, it claimed. Flapper also integrates with online systems of the local civil authorities – including Brazil’s ANAC – and automatically refreshes the aircraft’s airworthiness status. Future plans include integration with the flight tracking software, as well as flight management systems.

“We are 100% focused on the launch of Flapper 3.0, i.e. completely refined Flapper app. It will feature medevac services, high-value cargo and urban air mobility, aside from regular business charters. Once launched, it will surely be the most complete product on the market, evidencing eight years of hard work by our technology team,” he explained.

Last year, Flapper launched an aircraft sales department, led by Giampiero Colognori. The used aircraft marketplace is available within the same app and features a list of over 100 private jets and helicopters. As well as brokering aircraft sales, the platform also offers consultancy services including complete pre-sale checks, financing and international aircraft transfer. “To our surprise, our first customer came from Europe while we registered a few aircraft sold in Latin America, too. The used aircraft market has a fairly long sales cycle and we are working on improving our technology, especially on the mobile app,” said Malicki.

MRO Insider has added 51 FBOs to its platforms’ latest price quoting feature, bringing the total number of FBOs to 68 since going live earlier this year.

Through the MRO Insider platform, aviation services provider, Real Alpha Flight will deliver fuel, handling, permits, and other services to flight departments travelling in the Mexican region.

“Our team in Mexico has done a fantastic job of onboarding participating FBOs in the region,” said Andy Nixon, presiden, MRO Insider. “Business leaders are energised by the fact they no longer have to give a per gallon kickback to contract fuel and other programmes out there, instead they will pay us a flat fee, no matter how many services the customer requests.”

FBOs are visible on the MRO Insider live map, giving operators visibility to the services available in each region of the world, including the option to send requests directly. FBOs are notified via e-mail and push notifications when operators are searching for necessities like fuel, hangar space, lavatory service and transportation.

“To streamline alternatives for the operator, the app request pings all FBOs on our network within 100nm of the destination,” Nixon added. “This allows FBOs to get in front of and possibly move the business to their ramp, driving competition between FBO chains with unlimited marketing resources. It also gives the operator a road map to the best services for that particular trip.”

The average response time through the MRO Insider platform is less than 10 minutes, which may include a quote or a message from the FBO.

No initial fee is charged for the FBO to sign up. The company has a goal of surpassing 100 FBOs in 2022.

Lincoln, NEB. — Duncan Aviation’s Satellite Avionics shops in Denver, Colorado, and Austin and Dallas, Texas, recently received certification from Mexico’s Dirección General de Aeronáutica Civil (DGAC), which is the civil aviation authority for Mexico. This certification allows the Duncan Aviation shops in Denver, Austin, and Dallas to expand their avionics services for customers with aircraft based in Mexico.

“We’re proud to secure these authorizations because they let our customers from Mexico know that we are committed to and respectful of their processes and procedures,” says Duncan Aviation’s Manager of Satellite Operations Matt Nelson. “We’ve had several requests from customers with aircraft based in Mexico, and we anticipate that will only increase, especially with the upcoming ADS-B mandate.”

The Denver shop has been on the ramp at the Centennial Airport in Englewood for 16 years. It’s serves as home to both the avionics repair team and the Engine Rapid Response Team (RRT).

The facility in Dallas is one of Duncan Aviation’s longest-running Satellite Avionics Shops, and it has a new manager, Bryan Davis, for the first time in its 30-year history. The Dallas shop opened on September 11, 1988, and is located on the Dallas Love Field Airport.

The Duncan Aviation Avionics Satellite shop in Austin is located in the Atlantic Aviation hangar at the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

It is important to Duncan Aviation to be able to provide service to all of its customers, regardless of location. The Satellite shops in Denver, Austin and Dallas join those in Scottsdale, Arizona; Van Nuys, California; Las Vegas, Nevada; and Houston, Texas; as Duncan Aviation Satellite avionics facilities with DGAC certification.

Duncan Aviation locations hold certificates for 10 additional civil aviation authorities around the world. The Battle Creek, Michigan, facility has authorizations for Bermuda, Brazil, Cayman Islands, EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency), and Mexico. The Lincoln, Nebraska, facility has certifications for Argentina, Aruba, Bermuda, Brazil, Cayman Islands, China, EASA, Mexico, Venezuela, and India. The Provo facility has certificates for Bermuda, Brazil, Cayman Islands, EASA, and Mexico.

Textron Aviation division Cessna has delivered a Citation Latitude to a Mexican customer for the first time.

The aircraft will operate on the air taxi certificate of locally authorized Cessna dealer Avemex, who will manage the aircraft on behalf of an unnamed owner.

That owner says they will use the aircraft on missions around Mexico and North America.

“The Latitude has experienced an outstanding market reception with 23 aircraft delivered to customers around the world in its first seven months, more than any other in its class, and we are excited to bring it to our customers in Mexico,” said Bob Gibbs, regional vice president of Sales for Latin America and Caribbean. “The aircraft is ideally suited for the region with its ability to operate out of high elevation airports such as those found throughout Mexico, including the Toluca Airport. This is one of the most popular executive airports in the country with strict hot / high limitations, and the standard–equipped Latitude can meet the performance requirements with ease.”

Avemex have been an authorised Citation dealership for 25 years, and currently operate a Citation XLS.

“The Latitude’s class-leading combination of cabin space, range and acquisition cost, along with unparalleled support from both Cessna and our local channel partner Avemex, cemented the aircraft as the clear winner for this customer,” added Gibbs.
